Latest call · Q2 2026

do not buy yet; Telesat has materially improved strategic visibility, but the equity remains dominated by execution and refinancing risk.

Q2 revenue fell 25% to $79 million and adjusted EBITDA fell 62% to $22 million, while Lightspeed backlog reached $5.6 billion after the $2.7 billion ESCAPE contract; however, 2026 Lightspeed investment rose to CAD1.3–1.5 billion and legacy GEO debt maturities remain unresolved. The bull case is a fully funded 225-satellite constellation targeting global service in Q1 2028; the bear case is that contracted backlog does not translate into equity value before the capital structure becomes a constraint.

Near term

Refinancing negotiations with legacy lenders are the key near-term stock catalyst; management offered no maturity, ranking, collateral, or restructuring detail despite repeated analyst questions.

Execution milestones for MDA satellite production, Falcon 9 contracting, and ground-station deployment could support confidence in the Q1 2028 commercial-service target.

GEO deterioration remains a drag: management expects the retirement of Anik F4 and Telstar 14R to pressure revenue through the rest of 2026 and beyond.

The US$120 million GEO term loan adds liquidity, but its position in the capital structure was not disclosed; the US$189 million C-band payment is contingent on meeting spectrum-clearing deadlines in 2030 and 2031.

Longer term

ESCAPE changes Lightspeed’s mix toward government, defense, and sovereign demand while restoring commercial capacity lost when 25% of spectrum was allocated to Military Ka-band.

The 225 satellites are technically identical and follow the initial 156 through the same production line, reducing incremental design and delivery risk relative to a newly designed expansion.

Optical intersatellite links compliant with U.S. SDA standards could create a differentiated space-relay opportunity, including defense, Earth-observation, and potential in-space data-center applications.

The legacy GEO franchise is structurally shrinking: Q2 GEO revenue declined 26% to $78 million, utilization was 60% after adjusting for retirements, and management cited broadcast and fixed-broadband non-renewals.

Competitive differentiation remains unproven. Management acknowledged satellite broadband will be competitive and that pricing pressure is already embedded in its plan, while providing limited detail on price-per-bit, customer take-up, or expected returns.

Red flags

Analysts repeatedly pressed management on upcoming maturities and the possibility of a court-led restructuring; management only reiterated its goal of a consensual refinancing and declined to provide terms.

Management refused to disclose the collateral or ranking of the new US$120 million loan, leaving creditor priority and residual equity risk difficult to assess.

Lightspeed investment guidance increased by CAD300 million at both ends of the range to CAD1.3–1.5 billion for 2026 as the constellation expanded to 225 satellites.

The $5.6 billion Lightspeed backlog is strategically important but does not by itself establish near-term free cash flow or equity value; management gave no detailed customer economics or margin bridge for the revised forecast.

Further defense backlog is not yet contracted. Management expressed higher confidence in additional deals by the end of 2027 but would not rule in a 2026 award.

The company is relying on US$500 million of financing contingency and a complex mix of government milestone payments, vendor financing, and remaining facility availability; cost overruns or payment timing could still create funding pressure.
