1. Purpose & scope
This Usage Policy sets out what you may and may not do with data, pages, and API responses obtained from OpenFilings (the website at openfilings.org, the REST API, RSS/Atom feeds, and the MCP connector). It supplements our Terms of Service and applies to every account tier, including anonymous/unauthenticated access to public pages.
2. Acceptable use
You may browse, query, and export OpenFilings data for personal use, research, journalism, or internal business analysis — including feeding it into your own tools, spreadsheets, or AI agents for your own decision-making. Reasonable, rate-limited automated access through our documented REST API, RSS/Atom feeds, or MCP connector is expressly permitted and is the supported way to consume data at scale.
3. Prohibited uses
Regardless of account tier, you may not:
- Scrape, crawl, or otherwise systematically extract data from the website, dashboard, or any non-API surface, whether by script, browser automation, or any other automated means
- Use any extraction method — including the documented API — to build, populate, or feed a product or dataset that competes with OpenFilings, or to resell, sublicense, or redistribute the underlying data in bulk to third parties
- Use OpenFilings data to train or fine-tune a model that is itself offered commercially as a data or analytics product
- Circumvent authentication, quotas, or rate limits (rotating accounts or API keys, distributing requests across IPs to evade limits, etc.) to accomplish any of the above
- Misrepresent scraped or exported data as live, official, or sourced directly from the original regulator
Any commercial use of OpenFilings data beyond your own internal analysis — in particular reselling, redistributing, or embedding it in a product you offer to others — requires a separate written license from us. Contact us before you build on that assumption.
4. Rate limits & API terms
Metered endpoints are subject to the daily/monthly limits described in API rate limits and section 4 ("Acceptable use") of the Terms of Service. Limits exist precisely so that reasonable programmatic access remains available to everyone — bypassing them defeats that purpose.
5. Enforcement
We actively monitor for scraping and abusive traffic patterns. Violations of this policy may result in immediate rate limiting, API key revocation, or account suspension without notice, and we reserve the right to pursue legal remedies for commercial scraping or unauthorized redistribution of our data.
6. Reporting abuse
If you believe someone is scraping or redistributing OpenFilings data in violation of this policy, tell us at [email protected].
7. Changes
We may update this policy as our products and abuse patterns evolve. Material changes will be communicated the same way as Terms of Service changes.
