Strong operating quarter, but limited earnings visibility and higher balance-sheet risk argue against chasing the stock.

Latest call · Q4 2025

Hold: ADM delivered a strong Q2, with adjusted EPS of $1.29, segment operating profit up 40% to $1.36 billion, and Ag Services profit up $276 million to $426 million.

However, the result was unusually exposed to favorable positioning, commodity volatility and accounting timing; ethanol margins were near breakeven, while working capital rose $6 billion and debt increased $5 billion.

Near term

Ag Services may remain supported for the next two to three months by US high-quality wheat exports, regional supply dislocations and strong global demand, but management stressed that conditions are fluid and seasonal.

Corn Processing benefits from 25% higher 2011 sweetener contract pricing covering roughly 50%–60% of volume, although higher corn costs and incomplete volume recovery remain offsets.

US biodiesel demand could improve crushing rates over the next three quarters, while South American biodiesel weakness was characterized as short-term oversupply.

Ethanol exports should remain competitive while sugar prices are high, but industry spot margins are near breakeven and excess capacity is a constraint.

Golden Peanut integration and startup costs at the PHA and propylene glycol facilities should provide incremental support, with startup costs expected to become insignificant by fiscal year-end.

Longer term

ADM's global origination, storage, transportation and processing network is a meaningful structural advantage, and management targets 7%–10% growth in crushing as it expands in emerging markets.

The new dry ethanol plants are operating efficiently, but returns above the cost of capital depend heavily on future ethanol margins; management did not provide enough evidence to underwrite a durable return profile.

E15 adoption is likely to be gradual rather than a material 2011 catalyst; infrastructure, regulatory and fleet-turnover constraints make the demand benefit longer dated.

Capital allocation remains broad, spanning small infrastructure projects, emerging-market acquisitions, buybacks and debt refinancing, creating execution and prioritization risk.

Red flags

Analysts repeatedly challenged the sustainability of the unusually strong ethanol and cocoa/wheat results. Management attributed volatility to positioning and mark-to-market timing but did not quantify normalized earnings or reversal timing.

Industry ethanol margins are close to breakeven before the blender's credit, and management acknowledged excess capacity and predominantly spot purchasing.

Operating working capital reached nearly $15 billion, funded largely by about $5 billion of additional debt; commercial paper borrowings were $4.3 billion at quarter-end.

Management offered no earnings guidance and declined to say whether the favorable corn positioning carried into the March quarter, leaving near-term estimates highly uncertain.

Cocoa and wheat profits swung sharply from approximately $46 million in the prior quarter to roughly $200 million, with management citing complex accounting effects that were not fully explained.

The June conversion of equity units will add approximately 44 million common shares; the planned buyback to offset dilution could compete with strategic investment and balance-sheet needs.
