Latest call · Q1 2026

Buy: Delta delivered record Q3 revenue of $15.2 billion, 11.2% operating margin, $1.71 diluted EPS, and $830 million of free cash flow, while Q4 guidance calls for 2%-4% revenue growth and $1.60-$1.90 EPS. The premium cabin, corporate recovery, American Express loyalty economics, and industry capacity discipline support earnings and margin expansion, but the thesis still depends on reversing a disappointing Transatlantic quarter and sustaining demand beyond affluent travelers.

Near term

Q4 sales trends have accelerated across geographies and purchase windows, with management expecting positive unit revenue and a 10.5%-12% operating margin.

Premium and corporate demand are supporting unusually strong Q4 seasonality; management indicated premium revenue could overtake main-cabin revenue as soon as a quarter or two next year.

The government shutdown is currently estimated to cost less than $1 million per day, but the impact could grow if prolonged.

MRO growth is expected to normalize toward 20%-30% over time and may be approximately flat year-over-year in Q4; cargo growth is also expected to slow materially from Q3's 19%.

Longer term

Premium products are now Delta's highest-margin offerings, with premium seating expanding through approximately 40 annual aircraft deliveries, retrofits, lounges, and higher-premium new aircraft configurations.

The American Express co-brand remains a major earnings asset: remuneration rose 12% to $2 billion in Q3, with Delta targeting more than $8 billion in 2025 and a long-term goal of $10 billion within the next few years.

Management says efficiency gains remain in the early-to-middle innings from fleet simplification, airport utilization, workforce productivity, technology, and supply-chain improvements.

Debt paydown of nearly $2 billion year-to-date and 2.4x gross leverage improve financial resilience and support continued shareholder returns.

Industry capacity rationalization and the emerging split between Delta/United and weaker commodity carriers could preserve pricing power, though the durability of that bifurcation remains important to monitor.

Red flags

Transatlantic RASM fell 7% in Q3. Management acknowledged it held out for fares too long, misread booking curves, and plans to be more aggressive in filling main-cabin seats earlier next year; there is no quantified recovery target.

The main-cabin improvement is partly supply-driven: lower-end competitors are removing seats and raising fares under financial pressure. A renewed capacity response or weaker consumer demand could undermine Delta's pricing gains.

Q3 cash-flow improvement was driven substantially by working-capital normalization and releasing excess operating build, rather than solely by recurring earnings growth.

Maintenance and parts inflation, material availability, repair costs, and turn times remain above pre-pandemic levels, with management describing the recovery as multiyear.

2026 guidance was not provided. The bullish framework assumes stable demand, continued premiumization, and industry capacity discipline, leaving limited quantified visibility into the pace of margin expansion.
