Strong execution and reaffirmed outlook outweigh near-term phasing and contract risks.

Latest call · Q1 2026

Buy: Pearson delivered a strong Q1, with group revenue up 4%, Virtual Learning up 21% and Enterprise Learning & Skills up 8%, while reaffirming 2026 guidance and its medium-term outlook.

The growth is broadening beyond core courseware, but the thesis still depends on execution in AI-led enterprise partnerships and a return to growth in Assessment & Qualifications and PTE.

Near term

Virtual Learning should remain strong in Q2, although growth is expected to be below Q1 because of a small funding benefit pulled forward; H1 is indicated to resemble the prior H2 growth rate of 18%.

Assessment & Qualifications is expected to return to growth in Q2 as the PDRI comparison normalizes and new contracts contribute, although the New Jersey contract loss remains a headwind through Q2.

Maryland and Wyoming student-assessment wins contribute modestly in H2 2026, with the larger benefit arriving in 2027.

The accelerated share buyback is due to complete by the end of May; further capital returns remain subject to a future Board decision.

Longer term

Virtual Learning is gaining market share, supported by enrolment momentum, parental-choice tailwinds and improved marketing and enrolment processes.

Enterprise Learning & Skills partnerships with major technology companies could create a multi-year growth vector as five-year contracts ramp across employees, partner ecosystems and end customers.

Pearson’s moat remains strongest in operationally complex, trusted assessment, virtual-school and hybrid physical/digital workflows, which management says generate approximately 90% of profit.

A 96% contract-retention rate in the prior year supports confidence in the assessment franchise, but recurring tender outcomes remain important to the long-term thesis.

Red flags

The AI-partnership opportunity is described as potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars of incremental revenue through 2030, but management provided no quantified contribution, margin profile or delivery milestones.

New Jersey remains a drag across Q1 and Q2, while Middle East disruption could affect PTE migration and study-abroad demand despite the region representing approximately 2% of revenue.

PTE’s expected return to growth is still exposed to a pressured market, including the Middle East, and depends on share gains and pricing.

Virtual Learning’s exceptionally strong growth faces tougher comparisons in the second half, while Q1 included a small funding timing benefit.

The CFO transition is described as smooth, but the first results under the new CFO will be an execution and continuity checkpoint.
