Operational progress is visible, but the recovery remains clearance-led and second-quarter momentum is set to deteriorate.

Latest call · Q1 2026

PUMA’s Q1 was better than feared but not a clean recovery:

currency-adjusted sales fell 1%, adjusted EBIT rose 5% to about €64 million, and reported EBIT was approximately €52 million. Inventory clearance, outlet sales and favorable reserve reversals supported the result, while underlying sales still declined low-to-mid single digits; with Q2 expected to be clearly weaker, elevated net debt and an unresolved brand reset, the risk/reward is not compelling yet.

Near term

Q2 sales growth is expected to be clearly below Q1 because the reduction of undesirable wholesale business will be more pronounced; this raises execution risk against the full-year low-to-mid single-digit sales decline outlook.

Inventory clearance should continue supporting gross margin through 2026, including further reserve reversals, but it also indicates that reported growth and profitability are not yet representative of normalized demand.

Net debt rose to approximately €1.3 billion and free cash flow was negative €201 million in Q1; delivery of positive full-year free cash flow and continued working-capital reduction are important stock catalysts.

The CFO transition is immediate, with Markus Neubrand stepping down and Mark Langer starting in early May, adding execution and reporting-transition risk during the turnaround.

Longer term

NITRO has credible momentum across running, training, HYROX and handball, while specialist-store distribution expansion could provide a structural growth avenue in 2026-27.

The lifestyle recovery remains incomplete: management cited continued low-profile traction, but acknowledged that the Suede relaunch and broader lifestyle-running proposition will not be fully developed until 2027 and beyond.

Range simplification, lower wholesale inventory and a more disciplined distribution model could improve brand scarcity, gross margin and working-capital efficiency if sustained.

PUMA’s stated ambition to return to above-industry growth and healthy profits in 2027 depends on brand heat and full-price demand rebuilding after the reset; Q1 does not yet prove that transition.

Competitive positioning remains unproven outside selected low-profile styles and performance niches. The call emphasized product launches and athlete results, but provided limited evidence of broad-based share gains or normalized sell-through.

Red flags

Underlying Q1 sales declined in the low-to-mid single digits once clearance and reset effects are excluded, while Q2 is expected to be materially weaker than Q1.

The full-year EBIT outlook remains a loss of €50 million to €150 million despite Q1 EBIT of about €52 million, implying substantial seasonality, one-time costs and/or operating pressure in the remaining quarters.

Management would not quantify the full-year opex decline; it stated that absolute opex will not be materially lower as PUMA continues investing in DTC and the brand, limiting operating leverage.

The outlook excludes potential effects from Middle East developments and U.S. tariff decisions. Management also acknowledged rising fuel and bunker surcharges after the current inbound freight contracts expire at the end of June.

Net debt is elevated versus the prior year, and management gave no precise deleveraging path beyond targeting reductions over the coming years.
