Good cash generation and capital returns are offset by mobile mix pressure, execution risk and unresolved outage liabilities.
Latest call · FY 2026Hold: FY27 underlying EBITDAaL guidance is $8.5-$8.8 billion, cash EBIT is $4.75-$4.95 billion and a further $1 billion buyback supports the equity case, but the growth bridge leans on cost savings while branded postpaid subscribers fell 47,000 in 2H. Aura requires up to $1.8 billion of investment with cash flow dependent on still-uncontracted deals, and the unresolved outage investigation, potential ACMA penalties and satellite/regulatory risk make this a wait-for-proof story rather than a clean buy.
FY27 EBITDA growth depends on operating leverage, including benefits from FY26 redundancy spending of $206 million, while International loses $33 million of prior benefits and Wholesale Voice divestment effects flow through.
The May 2026 price increase should lift FY27 ARPU, but branded postpaid subscriber losses and stronger lower-margin wholesale, prepaid and sub-brand growth remain the key earnings-quality test.
ACMA's outage investigation and the external expert review remain open; management says outage costs and any penalties are not included in guidance, while credits processed were just under $1 million for more than 30,000 customer contacts.
Aura's strategic investment has risen from $1.6 billion to around $1.8 billion; management still targets mid-teens IRR and about a nine-year payback, but free cash flow is expected to be lumpy and depends on customer deals.
Satellite-to-mobile is currently complementary and small, but evolving technology and the ACCC mobile-services inquiry could pressure the value of Telstra's coverage premium and infrastructure returns.
The premium mobile proposition is not yet clearly protected: wholesale ARPU grew 8.8% versus 3.8% for postpaid handheld ARPU, while management relies on Network as a Product and 5G Standalone to create future willingness to pay.
Management did not quantify the churn impact from the July nationwide outage beyond saying there was no material customer impact to date, and the root-cause findings and regulatory consequences were still pending.
Aura's higher capital requirement is justified by pipeline confidence rather than disclosed signed contracts; management explicitly said the incremental free cash flow depends on deals and could arrive unevenly.
The FY27 growth bridge is not fully transparent: postpaid momentum is weakening and the call relies heavily on operating leverage, portfolio mix and infrastructure growth to deliver another roughly $300 million of EBITDA growth.
