constructive on AGC’s semiconductor-materials franchise, but the call does not justify an aggressive buy without valuation or segment-level earnings disclosure.

Management targets doubling semiconductor-related sales by 2030 versus 2025; the nearer-term case rests mainly on existing products—EUV mask blanks, CMP slurry, lithography quartz and CCL—while the most exciting packaging opportunities remain largely pre-commercial. The key tension is strong technical positioning versus limited financial transparency and execution risk in new products.

Near term

EUV mask-blank demand appears to have bottomed: management said 2026 demand will exceed 2024 on a comparable-period basis, with further growth expected from 2027; however, the business has relatively few customers and remains exposed to customer-specific ordering swings.

CCL is the clearest near-term packaging catalyst. AGC is supplying prototypes for 224 Gbps applications, with adoption-related sales expected from 2027 onward; current partial adoption is concentrated in routers and switches.

Existing high-share products should benefit from semiconductor production, layer-count and tool growth. AGC said ArF synthetic-quartz lens material has the top global share and that EUV mask blanks reached JPY40 billion of sales in 2024, though 2025 declined before recovery.

Performance Chemicals has JPY171.9 billion of 2025 sales, with electronics applications representing 24%; most of that electronics exposure is semiconductor-related. Management expects to raise the mix through new process materials and existing-product expansion.

Longer term

Management’s 2030 doubling target is more credible for Electronics as an existing-product growth plan than as a new-packaging bet: Suzuki explicitly said the Electronics portion includes almost none of the back-end development products.

Glass core is identified as the largest potential packaging opportunity, but industry ramp-up was pushed from the originally expected 2028 timing toward around 2029, with gradual customer adoption before a potentially faster expansion.

Photonic-electronic convergence is still development/prototyping, not mass production. Management sees initial takeoff around 2028–2029, much larger growth in the 2030s, and is targeting participation in a market potentially worth tens of billions of yen.

The moat is strongest where AGC combines proprietary materials, integrated production and qualification history: EUV blanks, ceria CMP slurry, ETFE release film and pellicle resin. AGC claims difficult replacement and high switching hurdles, but did not quantify customer concentration, share stability or returns on investment.

Strategic businesses including Electronics and Performance Chemicals have grown at an 8.9% CAGR since 2017, supporting the portfolio thesis, but the company did not isolate semiconductor operating profit or provide a margin framework for the targeted expansion.

Red flags

Analyst questioning exposed a major disclosure gap: AGC declined to provide sales or mix by Performance Chemicals semiconductor product and did not quantify profit contribution, leaving the earnings power of the franchise difficult to underwrite.

The 2030 sales-doubling target lacks a product-by-product bridge and excludes most back-end development products in Electronics. That makes the target dependent on sustained growth in existing products, especially blanks and CCL, rather than a diversified new-product ramp.

Management acknowledged it cannot yet determine whether its fluorine-based materials for emerging low-dielectric AI applications are ahead of or behind competitors. This is a material competitive uncertainty despite the positive market narrative.

Photonic components have many inquiries but remain at development and prototype stage; management confirmed mass production is still ahead. Glass core likewise carries unresolved industry-wide technical issues and timing risk.

PFAS regulation was explicitly acknowledged as a significant Performance Chemicals risk. Management said direct impact is currently limited, but mitigation, emissions management and alternative-technology work do not eliminate longer-term regulatory uncertainty.

Management rejected CCL cannibalization by glass core, but the answer was qualitative and did not address potential changes in package architecture, material intensity or pricing pressure across the value chain.
