Latest call · Q2 2026

cautiously constructive, but not a clear buy after the call.

Q2 revenue rose 7.9% YoY to RMB30.1bn, games revenue increased 9.7% to RMB25.0bn, and games gross margin expanded to 76.1% from 70.2%; however, non-GAAP net income fell to RMB7.7bn because of investment losses, while management provided no quantified forward outlook. The balance sheet and buybacks support downside, but the lean pipeline, early Sea of Remnants issues, and largely qualitative answers on Ananta and upcoming titles limit confidence in reacceleration.

Near term

Sea of Remnants is the immediate execution test: management acknowledged that the early game experience had too steep a learning curve. Player sentiment may improve with content and onboarding changes, but management gave no user, revenue, or retention targets to validate the recovery.

Sword of Justice, Where Winds Meet, Marvel Rivals, and Eggy Party provide strong near-term operating support, but Q2 online-games revenue declined 2% sequentially, so investors should distinguish live-service momentum from sustained portfolio growth.

Margin strength is a meaningful near-term earnings support, with games gross margin at 76.1% due to lower platform revenue-sharing costs; the durability of this benefit matters more than the headline expansion.

The RMB167.5bn net cash position and USD2.3bn of repurchases under the USD5bn authorization provide capital-return support, though they do not resolve weaker reported profit or pipeline risk.

Longer term

NetEase has demonstrated unusually strong live-operations capability across established franchises, with Where Winds Meet, Marvel Rivals, and Eggy Party extending the portfolio domestically and internationally. The key question is whether these successes can offset a relatively lean new-release slate.

Ananta is strategically important in the competitive urban open-world category. In response to an analyst explicitly asking how it will differentiate against competing titles, management cited distinctive identity, narrative, gameplay, and monetization but provided no concrete product evidence or launch timing.

AI may improve development efficiency and player experience, but management described it as an 'amplifier' without quantifying productivity gains, development-cost savings, or a measurable improvement in release cadence. It should not yet be underwritten as a durable competitive advantage.

Youdao is showing improving learning-services economics and AI-product momentum, while Cloud Music is stabilizing margins and engagement. These businesses are strategically useful but remain too small or slow-growing to materially change the group-level investment case in the near term.

Red flags

Management acknowledged that Sea of Remnants failed to sufficiently lower the early learning curve, directly contradicting the broader narrative of seamless execution in new titles. The planned fixes and long-term confidence were not supported by quantified KPIs.

The answer on Ananta's competitive differentiation was generic despite direct analyst pushback about competing urban open-world games. With no launch date, monetization framework, or comparative gameplay detail, execution and displacement risk remain unresolved.

On the two tested titles, Beneath The Mist and Tamas: Shadowveil, management said they would launch when refinement satisfies users but declined to provide timing or monetization expectations. This preserves flexibility but reduces visibility into the pipeline.

The call offered no formal revenue, margin, EPS, or launch guidance. Management's reliance on qualitative claims is particularly notable given the 8% first-half decline in non-GAAP net income and sequential decline in online-games revenue.

The thesis remains concentrated in a handful of large game franchises. If new titles underperform or competitive games from other publishers capture player time, current live-service strength may not compensate for an aging or delayed pipeline.
