Improving commercial trajectory, but leverage and execution risk prevent a clean buy.

Latest call · Q2 2026

Hold: Teva delivered solid Q3 execution, with revenue up 7% to $3.9 billion, AUSTEDO revenue up 30% to $339 million, and 2023 revenue guidance raised to $15.1-$15.5 billion.

However, the investment case remains balanced by 4.03x net debt/EBITDA, ongoing legal exposure, declining Revlimid contribution, and rising R&D and commercial spending; the TL1A opportunity is promising but the dose change and limited efficacy disclosure keep the major pipeline upside unproven.

Near term

AUSTEDO is expected to reach approximately $1.2 billion in 2023, while Q4 results must absorb a sharply lower Revlimid contribution and higher R&D spending.

UZEDY's 2024 ramp depends on hospital formulary and Medicare/Medicaid access; roughly 4,000 prescriptions included a large number of free samples, so paid demand remains to be demonstrated.

Q4 profitability depends on the expected favorable mix shift and gross margin improvement toward 53% for the full year.

The $500 million Sanofi upfront payment is excluded from 2023 guidance and should support liquidity, but does not by itself change underlying earnings.

Longer term

AUSTEDO's $2.5 billion 2027 target and planned European launch represent the central growth thesis; XR is attracting new prescribers, with about half of new starts coming from previously untreated VMAT2 patients or switches from competing therapies.

The portfolio mix could structurally improve profitability as AUSTEDO, AJOVY, UZEDY and future innovative launches grow faster than generics; management targets a 30% operating margin and 2.0x net debt/EBITDA by 2027.

Olanzapine LAI has been accelerated to a second-half 2024 readout, while TL1A interim data are expected in the second half of 2024; these are meaningful valuation catalysts but remain clinical-risk dependent.

Teva plans to use partnerships for a broad biosimilar portfolio, limiting capital intensity but increasing dependence on partners such as Alvotech for development, manufacturing readiness and regulatory execution.

Management expects R&D to run at approximately 6%-6.5% of revenue, indicating sustained investment rather than near-term margin maximization.

Red flags

Net debt remains high at $17.7 billion and 4.03x net debt/EBITDA; the deleveraging target requires sustained free cash flow while Teva continues investing in growth.

GAAP operating income fell to $355 million from $419 million, with $314 million of legal settlements and loss contingencies in the quarter; litigation remains a material source of earnings volatility.

The TL1A Phase 2 design dropped one dose level. Management cited in-vitro, biomarker and PK optimization but would not disclose which dose was removed or confirm whether a 500-milligram dose remains, leaving uncertainty around dose selection and program competitiveness.

The $600 million Sanofi milestone is tied to completion of Phase 2 and FDA permission to enter Phase 3, not to statistically significant or competitively differentiated efficacy; milestone receipt therefore does not validate the asset clinically.

Generics growth was helped materially by Revlimid, whose contribution is expected to become very small in Q4, while management acknowledged that pricing pressure will fluctuate as competition increases.

UZEDY's reported launch traction is not yet a clean commercial read-through because free samples account for a substantial portion of initial prescriptions and access work is still ongoing.
