Hold rather than chase:
Aebi Schmidt delivered a strong Q2, with $496 million of sales (+9.4% organic), $42.1 million of adjusted EBITDA (+22%; 8.5% margin), $516 million of orders (+16%) and a roughly $1.3 billion backlog (+20%). The bull case is improving execution, Shyft synergies and backlog conversion; the tension is that leverage remains 2.72x, margin is still well below the 2030 >13% target, and guidance depends on normalization of tariffs, geopolitics and inflation.
Walk-in van backlog conversion, Joliet ramp-up and Royal service-body output should support North American sales and EBITDA through the next two quarters.
Price increases are expected to improve gross margin only toward year-end 2026 and early 2027, creating a timing risk if input costs remain elevated.
Temporary safety-stock and bulk-purchasing investments will pressure working capital and leverage through roughly early 2027; management now targets year-end 2026 leverage at 2x or slightly above.
The $96 million, seven-year frame contract does not enter backlog until purchase orders are received and will produce its first revenue in 2027.
Management expects more than $40 million of annual Shyft synergies, with $37 million realized by year-end 2026 and roughly $5 million remaining in 2027; the remaining upside depends partly on in-house XP Service body PRO production and cross-selling.
The stated 2030 ambition of more than $3 billion in revenue and above 13% adjusted EBITDA margin requires continued footprint rationalization, aftermarket expansion, pricing, mix improvement and disciplined M&A.
The company is becoming more diversified across airport, municipal, chassis, commercial and agricultural markets, but the earnings recovery still relies materially on walk-in van and North American execution.
The most important competitive issue raised by the analyst was chassis sourcing. Management viewed Ford's move to Blue Bird positively for supply stability, but acknowledged customers are moving toward FCCC and that FCCC's planned 2028 launch requires aggressive monitoring.
Management attributed current gross-margin pressure to supplier price inflation, tariffs, energy costs and geopolitical disruption; the mitigation case relies on price increases that are delayed by the existing backlog.
The updated leverage target is less favorable than the prior target of 2x or slightly below, indicating that supply-chain security investments are consuming cash despite reported working-capital improvements.
The $1.3 billion backlog provides visibility but is not equivalent to near-term revenue: the highlighted $96 million frame contract is excluded until purchase orders arrive, and much of it begins in 2027.
The 2030 plan includes future M&A, while management first needs to deleverage. Capital allocation could therefore become a tension between growth investment and balance-sheet repair.
Management gave a constructive response to the Ford/Blue Bird transition but did not quantify potential disruption, customer migration, or the company's exposure if FCCC gains share in 2028.
