Latest call · Q2 2026

wait rather than buy aggressively.

XPeng delivered a strong volume rebound—103,295 vehicles, Q2 revenue of RMB19.74 billion (+51.5% QoQ), and 20.7% gross margin—but vehicle margin fell to 12.1% and net loss widened to RMB1.34 billion. International growth, Volkswagen R&D revenue, and the IRON robotics financing improve the narrative, but the call offered no quantified robot sales, profitability, or ADAS monetization proof; the investment case still depends on execution rather than demonstrated earnings power.

Near term

Q3 delivery guidance of 115,000–121,000 units and revenue guidance of RMB21.7–23.4 billion imply continued sequential growth, but the key earnings variable is whether MONA L03 can ramp without further supply-chain or weather disruptions.

Vehicle margin remains the immediate pressure point: it was unchanged sequentially at 12.1% and declined year over year during the product-generation transition, despite overall gross margin being supported by higher-margin services and international mix.

New model launches—G9L in September, MONA L05 in Q4, and overseas MONA L03 deliveries in Q4—are the near-term test of whether record orders translate into profitable deliveries rather than marketing and channel costs.

Q2 services and other revenue rose 93.9% year over year, primarily from Volkswagen technical R&D milestones. Investors should distinguish repeatable revenue from milestone-driven contribution when assessing gross-margin durability.

Longer term

International expansion is the strongest current structural positive: overseas deliveries exceeded 20,000 in Q2, grew 81% year over year, and export ASP exceeded EUR40,000. Sustained overseas volume at those economics could materially improve XPeng’s mix versus domestic price competition.

The combination of in-house chips, ADAS software, vehicle data, manufacturing, and an 85% overlapping robotics supply chain could create genuine operating leverage across automotive and robotics if the technology transfers into reliable products at scale.

IRON has potentially attractive economics—management targets pricing at roughly 2.5–3.0 times bill of materials and expects software, upgrades, and subscriptions to lift lifetime profit—but this remains a framework, not evidence of demand or realized margins.

VLA 2.0’s claimed performance on European roads with minimal local training data could strengthen XPeng’s global differentiation, but regulatory approval, safety validation, local compliance, and customer willingness to pay remain more important than parameter count or internal comparisons.

Robotaxi commercialization without an in-car safety operator is targeted for 2027. That could create software and service revenue, but the current evidence is only 2,000 internal test orders in Guangzhou, not commercial utilization or unit economics.

Red flags

Management declined to provide robot volume guidance, profitability timing, or the sales volume needed for breakeven when directly pressed by Goldman Sachs. Claims that profitability will arrive quickly therefore remain untestable.

The IRON financing is strategically validating but does not establish end-market demand. The business remains consolidated, and management acknowledged that the two businesses have not yet been separated operationally, creating potential transparency and capital-allocation risk.

The claimed robotics moat—full-stack development, 2,250 TOPS, human-like dexterity, and high-quality data—was not benchmarked against named competitors on cost, reliability, uptime, safety, or commercial customer outcomes.

The CEO’s assertion that VLA 2.0 is on par with a leading global ADAS competitor was based on internal test drives and was not supported with independent safety metrics, disengagement data, regulatory milestones, or subscription economics.

Automotive profitability remains fragile: vehicle margin declined to 12.1% year over year while R&D increased 32.1% and SG&A increased 15.2% year over year. Q2 operating loss was RMB1.14 billion despite the sharp delivery rebound.

The company cited record orders but also acknowledged extreme weather and supply-chain disruptions affecting MONA L03’s ramp. The gap between orders, production capacity, deliveries, and realized vehicle margin is still unresolved.
