Latest call · Q1 2027

Cautious hold—not a clean buy after the call.

Q1 revenue rose 6.4% to $110.8M and adjusted EBITDA rose 6.9% to $21.5M, but FY2027 guidance was cut to $468M-$473M revenue, $111M-$114M EBITDA and $20M-$23M FCF. The bull case is a faster-than-expected South African National Treasury ramp—over $27M of near-term ARR and 70,000 installations—while the key tension is that execution capacity constraints, $17M of foregone revenue and $5M of one-time costs are currently overwhelming reported growth and cash-generation visibility.

Near term

Production recovery from the WiFi-chip compatibility issue is the immediate test; approximately $3.2M of product revenue was delayed and some Q2 revenue may shift into Q3.

South Africa deployment execution is the central catalyst and risk: installations are expected to rise from 70,000 to 80,000-90,000 over the next few quarters, but management acknowledged the ramp may be lumpy rather than linear.

Management expects roughly 4% sequential revenue growth through Q4, with services growth in the high-single digits during FY2027.

Product gross margin recovery toward 31%-32% in the second half and realization of the $12M annualized cost-removal target are important to the projected exit-rate margin.

Longer term

The South African contract could expand toward a 150,000-vehicle relevant opportunity, with additional cross-sell potential once customers are installed; however, the revenue timing and cash conversion remain execution-dependent.

The recurring mix is improving: services were 85% of Q1 revenue, grew 9.1%, and carried a 61.1% gross margin versus 21.3% for products.

Land-and-expand momentum is credible but still needs conversion into sustained organic growth: 12 Fortune 500 customers expanded on-site footprints and 10 expanded AI-video adoption, while AI-video bookings rose 20% sequentially.

The European construction customer win across 26 countries supports Unity's yard, warehouse and over-the-road differentiation, but the call did not quantify the multimillion-dollar ARR or deployment timing.

Leverage remains material at 2.5x adjusted net debt to adjusted EBITDA, and $24M of expected cash interest constrains the path from EBITDA growth to free cash flow.

Red flags

Management framed the guidance reduction as timing, but the cut is substantial: $17M of revenue, $11M of adjusted EBITDA and $10M-$15M of FCF versus prior ranges. The claim that FY2028 growth will accelerate was not supported with quantified contract timing or bookings conversion.

The 70,000-unit South African deployment is seven to nine times the original near-term expectation. Management repeatedly stressed operational discipline and acknowledged that government deployments require six to nine months to ramp, making the revenue profile difficult to model.

The company is foregoing existing and projected South African revenue because it cannot adequately staff or service both the legacy business and the National Treasury ramp. That raises questions about scalability and customer retention beyond this contract.

When analysts asked about global share and win rates, management offered only that share and win rates are growing; no win-rate, churn, competitive displacement or market-share data were provided.

MNO and Accenture contribution was not quantified despite analyst requests. Management cited traction, but investors still lack evidence that these channels can materially diversify growth outside South Africa.

The component issue was described as resolved, but product revenue declined 6.7% and product margins fell to 21.3%; the recovery depends on restoring production and fixed-cost absorption without further slippage.

Red flags

  • The company has incurred recurring losses and negative operating cash flow since inception and reported a $226.3 million accumulated deficit at March 31, 2026.
  • Debt totaled approximately $280.0 million at March 31, 2026, including $44.1 million of short-term bank debt, $6.3 million of current long-term maturities and $229.7 million of long-term debt.
  • The $20.6 million RMB General Facility was repayable on demand, and the company was still discussing replacement banking arrangements after year-end; definitive documentation and approvals remained outstanding in the excerpt.
  • The allowance for credit losses increased to $9.2 million after a $16.8 million current-period provision, versus a $4.1 million allowance at March 31, 2025.
  • The company completed two major acquisitions in the prior two years while also undertaking transformation initiatives, creating material integration and goodwill-risk exposure; goodwill was not impaired, but the March 31, 2026 market-capitalization decline triggered a quantitative impairment test.
