Excellent cash generation is offset by operational, safety, cost, and project-execution risks.
Latest call · Q2 2026Hold after a strong Q2:
Agnico generated over $1.3 billion of free cash flow, $1.5 billion of adjusted net income, and 856,000 ounces of gold, but the Barnat wall failure strands 370,000 ounces and pushes Canadian Malartic costs higher in 2027-28. The long-term pipeline is attractive, including Hope Bay's planned 400,000-450,000 ounces per year, yet three fatalities in the last year, execution risk, inflation, and still-unfinalized San Nicolas permitting keep the risk-reward from being a clean buy.

Near term
Barnat remediation is planned for Q3 with mining expected to resume in Q4; the company has not quantified a full production or cash-cost offset for the lost ounces.
Detour throughput is expected to remain within guidance while grades decline from the strong first half; Fosterville may sustain somewhat better grades than originally planned.
The company may exceed its full-year target of returning 40% of free cash flow to shareholders after returning 48% through the first half.
Longer term
Hope Bay construction has been sanctioned and is over 70% engineered, but Arctic logistics, contractor execution, and ramp-up remain material delivery risks.
Malartic, Detour, Upper Beaver, Hope Bay, and Finland provide a credible production-growth pipeline, but the 20%-30% production increase over the next decade remains a management target rather than delivered growth.
Labour inflation of roughly 3%-4% and diesel exposure could pressure margins; management has historically offset only about half of inflation through productivity.
Red flags
A rock movement at Barnat makes 370,000 ounces inaccessible, with approximately 300,000 ounces remaining to mine; management would not currently model recovering the stranded ounces underground.
Three fatalities occurred in the last year, and management acknowledged that safety controls had eroded or risks were not properly assessed.
San Nicolas is only 45% engineered and still requires supplementary permits; no sanction date was provided.
The Finland consolidation used almost $600 million in cash, while optimization of the Ikkari project is not expected until the end of 2027.
