Strong execution, but unchanged guidance and reliance on unproven H2 catalysts warrant waiting for confirmation.

Latest call · H1 2026

Croda delivered a solid H1:

constant-currency sales rose 5% to £881m, adjusted operating profit increased 7% to £156m, EPS grew 9% to 78p, and margin expanded to 17.7%. However, FY2026 guidance remains unchanged at 3%-6% organic sales growth with further margin expansion, while H2 depends on a recovery in lumpy Pharma Solutions and benefits from transformation that management declined to upgrade. The improving Beauty Actives franchise is encouraging, but the risk/reward is not yet a clean buy.

Near term

Consumer Care, particularly Beauty Actives, is expected to sustain strong growth, although management cautioned against extrapolating its 27% H1 growth rate.

Pharma Solutions project revenue is expected to improve in H2, but analysts explicitly challenged whether the order book will convert after a disappointing H1.

Group margins are expected to expand sequentially in H2 as higher Life Sciences mix, plant utilization and transformation benefits offset fewer one-off costs.

Working capital should reduce in H2, but the structural benefits have not yet appeared; typical annual working-capital outflow remains £20m-£30m.

Middle East disruption, petrochemical input costs and any fading of limited Q2 pre-buying remain near-term variables.

Longer term

The innovation reset is gaining traction: new and protected products grew 7%, Beauty Actives grew 27%, and Ceramides increased 44%.

Transformation generated £18m of H1 savings and £46m cumulatively, with further benefits expected; however, the £100m target was maintained rather than upgraded.

Expansion of Beauty Actives, biotech-derived ingredients, tailored delivery systems and Asian manufacturing could support higher-quality growth and mix.

Croda is targeting 20% group returns in two years, with management describing progress toward that objective as linear.

Competitive pressure remains material: management acknowledged that smaller challenger beauty brands have innovated faster, and US market-share recapture was described only qualitatively.

CrodaOn adoption reached 18% of customers versus 10% at the start of the year, potentially lowering cost to serve as more low-value orders migrate online.

Red flags

Pharma Solutions was below expectations in H1, and management's confidence in H2 rests mainly on an order book rather than quantified committed revenue.

Analysts pressed on weak margin drop-through in Consumer Care and the lack of an upgrade to the £100m transformation target; management cited exit rates and one-off costs without quantifying H2 margins.

US share recovery was not quantified: management said it is winning back some business, but growth is concentrated in premium Actives while masstige demand remains weak.

Free cash flow improved only to £38m from £28m despite earnings growth, with higher inventory and receivables; working-capital transformation is deferred mainly to 2027-2028.

The business remains exposed to challenger-brand competition and macro-sensitive lower-income consumer demand, particularly in the US.
