Agentic read of the latest earnings call — recommendation updates when we process a new transcript. Research synthesis, not investment advice.

Near-term earnings remain exposed to weak merchant offtake despite plausible cost and demand catalysts.

Latest call · Q4 2017

Hold: Q4 operating income was Rs.1,862 crore and EBITDA Rs.660 crore, but PAT was only Rs.24 crore as deemed PLF fell to 52% and generation dropped 31% year on year.

Cost relief from refinancing and up to 50% domestic-coal blending is credible, yet roughly one-third of capacity remains open and the recovery depends on uncontracted power demand and future PPAs.

Themes
  • Merchant Power Demand
  • Ppa Tieups
  • Domestic Coal Blending
  • Debt Refinancing
  • Receivables

Near term

Karnataka short-term PPA renewal and any new medium-term tenders are key to monetizing open capacity, but management provided no firm timetable.

Completion of the MoEF letter could enable domestic-coal procurement and up to 50% blending; savings are unquantified and depend on sufficient arbitrage.

Refinancing is expected to reduce borrowing cost from above 10% to about 9.5% by the end of FY2018.

Longer term

The investment case improves materially only if the roughly one-third open capacity is converted into durable PPAs as Indian power demand recovers.

Debt remains substantial at Rs.13,384 crore versus consolidated net worth of Rs.10,368 crore, so utilization and financing costs remain central to equity returns.

JSW Steel demand could lift the Ratnagiri captive PPA toward the previously discussed 550 MW level, but management gave no specific date.

Red flags

Weak demand caused poor merchant offtake, lower tariffs, 52% deemed PLF and a 31% year-on-year generation decline.

Management's medium-term tariff view of Rs.3.75-4.00 per unit is an assertion rather than contracted guidance, while near-term exchange prices may be around Rs.3.

Receivables remain overdue across businesses, including Karcham Wangtoo, and the company would not quantify the exposure.

The company had to purchase power during a Ratnagiri unit shutdown to meet its supply obligation.
