Strong execution, but earnings quality and second-half visibility remain uncertain.
Latest call · H1 2026HOLD: FUCHS delivered a strong H1, with sales up 11% to EUR2.0bn and EBIT up 24% to EUR260m, prompting 2026 EBIT guidance of EUR460-480m.
However, roughly two-thirds of Q2 growth came from pre-buying or temporary competitor shortages, while raw-material inflation, limited Q3 visibility, weaker cash conversion and the Saudi plant fire keep the risk/reward from being a clean buy.
Q3 is the critical test for price pass-through: management acknowledged that margins can enter a temporary “margin valley” when raw-material costs jump.
Pre-buying is expected to unwind by year-end, creating a weaker second-half volume comparison despite the upgraded EBIT range.
The Saudi Arabia plant is expected to have no output for the rest of 2026 and may take more than a year to rebuild, although management expects alternative sourcing to protect guidance.
Net operating working capital reached EUR910m, driving H1 free cash flow before acquisitions down to EUR61m from EUR81m.
FUCHS’s broad sourcing network, 70 operating companies and 40 blending plants are supporting customer retention and potential share gains when competitors cannot supply.
The durability of market-share gains remains unquantified: management said some displaced competitor business will be retained, but not all, with no estimate of the portion likely to persist.
Digital transformation remains on track, with Mexico go-live planned for March 2027 and the U.S. for July 2027; benefits are expected only after implementation in each region.
Structural growth appears strongest in automotive aftermarket and mining, while data-center cooling is currently too small and highly competitive to alter the thesis.
Management explicitly said visibility is limited and declined to comment on July trading or order books, leaving the upgraded guidance dependent on a volatile second half.
The company could not quantify how much Q2 volume reflected genuine share gains versus pre-buying and temporary supply disruptions, a key issue raised repeatedly by analysts.
Raw-material availability remains tight in Group III base oils and PAO, with management not expecting supply normalization before mid-2027 even if the conflict ends soon.
The Saudi facility’s earnings contribution is described as only around 1.5% of group EBIT, but rebuild timing, cost and the final impact remain unquantified; FUCHS owns only 32% of the joint venture.
Liquidity fell from EUR151m at year-end 2025 to EUR13m after the dividend, Turkey acquisition and working-capital build.
