Latest call · Q2 2026

Buy: CenterPoint reiterated 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $1.89-$1.91, implying 8% growth, and maintained its 7%-9% annual EPS growth framework through 2035.

The investment case strengthened with 14 GW of Houston large-load projects eligible for ERCOT Batch Zero, a $1.2 billion capital-plan increase to $66.7 billion without additional equity, and roughly $6 million per GW per month of future demand-charge cash flow; however, transmission permitting, Moody’s negative outlook, and potentially equity-funded Indiana growth remain material risks.

Near term

ERCOT’s August 7 confirmation of base-load volumes and the April 2027 allocation decision for approximately 4 GW of studied load will determine how much of the 14 GW pipeline advances.

Management expects to connect approximately 3 GW of Houston load in 2027, with nearly all eligible projects targeted for energization by the end of 2030.

The comprehensive Texas transmission study is expected in the second half of 2026, with route-related cost visibility improving in the first quarter of 2027.

A potential approximately 30-basis-point FFO-to-debt improvement from Corporate Alternative Minimum Tax recovery and the October 1 Ohio gas LDC sale could support credit metrics.

Longer term

Houston Electric rate base is expected to grow at more than 18% annually over the next three years, while the company cites at least $10 billion of additional capital opportunities through 2035.

The 14 GW of eligible Houston projects could produce more than $5 billion of cumulative residential and commercial customer savings over the next decade, supporting regulatory and political acceptance if realized.

Indiana large-load projects could create approximately $250 million of residential customer savings over 15 years, but additional generation and transmission investment may require equity.

Competitive positioning is based on Houston’s roughly 10 GW of existing hosting capacity and the ability to connect new load at less than $60 million per GW; the durability of this advantage depends on transmission expansion and execution.

Red flags

Management conceded that incremental demand-charge cash flow, temporary-generation-unit proceeds, and additional CAMT recovery are not yet incorporated into the capital plan, making the no-additional-equity outlook dependent on future tailwinds.

The CFO acknowledged that incremental Indiana generation, transmission, and other growth capital will likely require some equity, contradicting the more favorable no-equity framing for the current $1.2 billion increase.

Moody’s outlook remains negative despite adjusted FFO-to-debt improving nearly 100 basis points sequentially to 13.4%; management could not provide a timeline for an outlook change.

Approximately 3 GW of submitted Texas projects lack ERCOT-approved studies, and management said the path to energization is unclear. Political and community opposition to 765 kV transmission could also delay or reduce the longer-term opportunity.
