Strong structural growth, but near-term margins and earnings quality remain mixed.

Latest call · Q1 2027

Hold. Titan delivered broad-based growth and said buyer momentum normalized in June, but earnings quality was weaker than reported:

jewellery’s normalized EBIT margin was 10.9% after ₹407 crore of customs-duty realization and a 75–80 bps inventory MTM benefit, both of which should reverse over the next 2–3 quarters. The long-term growth case remains intact, but competitive intensity is not easing, management did not raise margin guidance, and Damas remains loss-making amid the Middle East conflict.

Near term

Customs-duty gains should flow through in Q2 and Q3, creating reported support but subsequent reversals as inventory is sold.

Jewellery demand recovered in June after May disruption, although plain-gold demand softened toward late July as consumers waited for gold-price direction.

Monitor whether studded jewellery momentum and lower coin growth improve mix enough to offset continued competitive discounting.

Damas losses and weak Gulf footfall remain a drag on the international portfolio; management expects the broader international business to remain profitable.

Longer term

Titan continues to target healthy double-digit jewellery growth through buyer acquisition, regionalization, studded penetration, retail expansion and lower-karatage products.

CaratLane is progressing toward a roughly 10% EBIT margin, while TEAL’s normalized long-term margin is expected to gravitate toward 12%–16%, although growth remains the priority.

Exchange contributes more than 50% of Tanishq business and remains a significant customer-acquisition channel.

The key competitive risk is sustained discounting and increasing store/brand intensity, particularly in regional markets; management acknowledged no easing in competition.

Natural-diamond pricing and consumer sentiment toward lab-grown versus natural diamonds were described as stable, supporting studded recovery.

Red flags

The 10.9% normalized jewellery EBIT margin was below the prior-year normalized 11.3%, despite strong reported growth.

₹407 crore of customs-duty benefit and the 75–80 bps inventory MTM benefit are temporary and expected to reverse, obscuring underlying profitability.

Management retained the prior roughly 11% jewellery margin center of gravity but declined to provide more precise or revised guidance.

Analysts pressed on whether growth can hold with flat gold prices and on competitive discounting; management offered qualitative playbooks rather than quantified targets.

Damas has moved from a profitable business to a loss in Q1 because war-related conditions reduced Gulf footfall and ticket sizes.
