Business / Consolidation

Basis of consolidation The consolidated financial information includes the financial statements of British American Tobacco p.l.c. and its subsidiary undertakings, collectively ‘the Group’, together with the Group’s share of the results of its associates and joint arrangements. A subsidiary is an entity controlled by the Group. Non-controlling interests represent the share of earnings or equity in subsidiaries that is not attributable, directly or indirectly, to shareholders of the Group. Identifiable assets and liabilities acquired in a business combination are measured at fair value at the date of acquiring control. Disposals of subsidiaries and businesses due to sale or market withdrawal are accounted for as disposals from the date of losing control and may be classified as held-for-sale disposal groups at the balance sheet date if specific tests under IFRS 5 Non-current Assets Held For Sale and Discontinued Operations are met. Discontinued operations, where applicable, comprise material disposal groups representing a significant geographical area of operations or business activities. Associates comprise investments in undertakings, which are not subsidiary undertakings or joint arrangements, where the Group exercises significant influence. They are accounted for using the equity method. Joint arrangements comprise contractual arrangements where two or more parties have joint control and where decisions regarding the relevant activities of the entity require unanimous consent. Joint ventures are accounted for using the equity method. The Group accounts for its share of the assets, liabilities, income and expenses of joint operations.
