Strong execution and durable platform growth, but near-term margin and valuation support are not sufficiently clear for a clean buy.
Latest call · Q2 2027Walmart delivered a solid quarter, with constant-currency sales growth of 5%, global eCommerce growth of 23%, and adjusted operating income growth of 17.4% including tariff refunds; FY2027 guidance rose to 4%-5% sales growth, 7%-8.5% operating-income growth, and $2.80-$2.87 EPS. The strategic engine is credible—marketplace grew 52%, advertising 38%, and U.S. eCommerce 24%—but the near-term earnings setup is less clean because price investments are unquantified, Q3 operating-income growth is guided to only 2%-4%, fuel costs add more than $2 billion, and management acknowledged that lapping 19% EPS growth next year will be difficult.
Q3 sales growth is guided to 3%-3.75%, with a more than 100-basis-point headwind from the timing of Flipkart's Big Billion Days; Q4 should receive a roughly similar benefit.
Track whether the 11,000 rollbacks produce the promised lagged acceleration in U.S. traffic, units, and share gains without excessive margin pressure. Management provided no quantified payback threshold or return rate.
Q3 operating-income growth is guided to 2%-4% as price investments have their full-quarter impact; management says Q2 and Q3 together should average approximately 10% growth.
Fuel costs are expected to be more than $2 billion above the original annual assumptions, while Vibe integration adds an estimated 20-basis-point operating-income headwind.
U.S. comp performance remains exposed to health-and-wellness normalization: maximum fair pricing is now expected to be a 125-basis-point full-year headwind, while the prior GLP-1 tailwind is roughly halved.
Marketplace, advertising, membership, fulfillment services, and data businesses are becoming a larger share of profit; management said nearly half of operating-income growth came from these areas and U.S. eCommerce incremental margins were in the high-single-digit to low-double-digit range over roughly the last six quarters.
Walmart's store network is increasingly a fulfillment asset: stores are the last-mile nodes for 80% of eCommerce orders and 100% of fast deliveries, supporting sub-30-minute delivery in 38 U.S. markets.
Global platform replication is a meaningful growth opportunity, with Walmart extending marketplace capabilities to Mexico and Canada and launching Walmart+ in Canada; execution and returns outside the U.S. remain to be proven.
The membership and pharmacy ecosystems have attractive customer economics: members spend approximately four times more than non-members, while health-and-wellness customers spend about three times the average Walmart customer and pharmacy-delivery users spend nearly twice that again.
Advertising could lift incremental margins if it continues growing materially faster than eCommerce, but that remains a framework rather than a committed financial target.
The central price-investment thesis is still largely qualitative. Management cited durable share gains and a lagged elasticity benefit but could not quantify how much of the rollback portfolio meets return thresholds or how much vendor funding supports the investment.
The $2.9 billion tariff refund is largely received and is being reinvested, making the reported Q2 profit growth unusually nonrecurring and shifting pressure into Q3 and the FY2028 comparison.
Management explicitly said lapping 19% EPS growth next year will be challenging, raising the risk that the current earnings uplift creates a difficult base rather than a durable acceleration.
The lower-income consumer is showing greater pressure as fuel prices exceeded $4, with June trade-offs visible in the business; general merchandise also slowed after a stimulus-related Q1 benefit.
Inventory rose 6% in constant currency versus roughly 5% sales growth. Management reported no major concern, but elevated inventory alongside price investment could increase markdown or cash-flow risk if demand softens.
