Strong cash generation is offset by commodity and execution uncertainty.

Latest call · FY 2026

Hold: FY26 delivered A$5.4bn revenue, A$1.25bn EBITDA and A$132/t unit cost, but FY27 guidance embeds lower production at the midpoint and a wide A$132-147/t cost range.

The balance sheet and upcoming end of revenue sharing are bullish, but diesel, Narrabri execution and cyclical coal prices make this a wait-for-evidence story rather than a clean buy.

Near term

FY27 managed ROM guidance is 38-41 million tonnes, while the company says the midpoint is below FY26 because Daunia moves into a higher-strip southern domain.

Diesel is currently around A$1.30-1.35 per litre versus the A$1.16/litre average assumption underpinning the midpoint cost guidance; a return toward normal pricing is not controllable.

Narrabri requires the second stage of longwall refurbishment and additional development capital; any slippage would pressure FY27 volumes and cash flow.

The company is targeting the top end of production guidance and the low end of costs, but that is an aspiration rather than a separately quantified commitment.

Longer term

From April 2027, Queensland cash flows will no longer be subject to the acquisition's deferred payment and revenue-sharing arrangements, potentially adding roughly US$170-180 million of annualised cash flow at recent pricing.

Narrabri could return to a 6-7 million tonne annual run rate if the refurbished longwall performs in the less geotechnically challenging Panel 205, but this remains unproven after three years below five million tonnes.

Vickery remains a prospective, higher-cost growth option with an 8:1 strip ratio; management is refreshing project economics rather than committing to an investment decision.

Structural cost improvement is becoming harder: management says the early easy savings have been captured, while FY27 must first offset 3-4% industry inflation.

Red flags

FY27 cost guidance spans A$15/t despite the strong FY26 result, reflecting material diesel and inflation uncertainty.

Narrabri's recovery case depends on a capital-intensive refurbishment and geotechnical improvement after repeated underperformance.

FY26 statutory NPAT of A$385 million includes A$158 million of non-cash, non-recurring gains; underlying NPAT was only A$227 million.

The 70% FY26 payout exceeded the stated 40-60% policy range and management explicitly said this should not be inferred as a policy change.
