EDINET explained — how to read Japanese financial filings as a non-Japanese speaker
If you cover global equities and skip Japan, you're missing the world's largest auto manufacturer, key semiconductor supply chains, and a $5T+ equity market.
Japan's regulatory filings live on EDINET (Electronic Disclosure for Investors' NET). It's free. It's comprehensive. It's also in Japanese, on JP-GAAP, with XBRL bundles that assume you already know what 有価証券報告書 means.
What's on EDINET
- Yūho (有価証券報告書) — annual securities report, closest to a US 10-K
- Quarterly reports — shorter periodic updates
- Extraordinary disclosures — material events
For KPI extraction, Yūho and quarterly filings are where revenue (売上高), operating income (営業利益), and net income (当期純利益) live.
Why it's hard without help
Language. MD&A, risk factors, and footnotes are Japanese. Machine translation on PDFs loses table structure.
JP-GAAP presentation. Line items don't map 1:1 to US-GAAP. 売上高 is your revenue anchor — but scope, consolidation, and segment notes still matter.
Access friction. Search by sec code (e.g. Toyota 7203), pick the right doc ID, download XBRL/CSV, find the right context. Repeat for every company in your coverage list.
Toyota — a real normalized example
From Toyota's FY2025 consolidated Yūho (EDINET doc S100VWVY):
- Revenue: ¥48,036,704 million (¥48.0T)
- Operating income: ¥4,795,586 million
- Operating margin: 10.0%
- Net income: ¥4,765,086 million
On OpenFilings, this appears as canonical revenue, operating_income, net_income — same field names as a US 10-K. English labels. Ready for a comp sheet or an AI agent.
How OpenFilings surfaces this
We ingest EDINET periodic filings, extract KPIs, and surface them under the same field names as every other market:
- Filings — browse Japanese filings alongside US and Korean names, no account
- MCP —
list_filingswithmarket_id=jp, thenget_filing_kpis - REST API — same data for your backend
Toyota, Samsung, and Apple show up as revenue, operating_income, net_income — same fields, same units of comparison — on Filings.
