avoid buying for now; the call showed a demand-rich but execution-poor business with no demonstrated path to near-term profitability.
Q2 revenue fell 8% year over year to $11.5 million, gross loss was $1.0 million, EBITDA loss was $1.9 million, and net loss was $2.7 million ($0.41 per share), despite $11.5 million of cash and no debt. The bull case is strong backlog and eventual operating leverage, but management provided no quantified recovery timeline and conceded that competition limits pricing power.
Near term
Q3 acceptance testing and customer qualification of the first new plating line are potential catalysts, but management said commercialization will take several months.
Average selling prices improved in Q2, yet management only expressed hope for further mix improvement and explicitly declined to forecast Q3 revenue or gross profit.
Roughly one-third of backlog remains priced at historical exchange rates and another third at approximately NIS 3.2 per U.S. dollar, creating continued margin drag even if production rises.
Fiberglass and other raw-material constraints, including allocation quotas and price increases, could prevent the company from converting backlog into shipments.
The second plating line is expected to arrive and be installed by year-end 2026, but the delay adds execution risk; supplier penalties do not eliminate the operational impact.
Longer term
If the company can raise throughput, improve production efficiency, and complete the plating-line ramp, fixed-cost absorption could materially improve margins from the current depressed base.
The planned workforce expansion, ERP implementation, and new production capacity are necessary infrastructure investments, but they increase the burden of proof because revenue has not yet responded to prior spending.
Medical certifications and continued high-end industrial demand could diversify the business beyond defense, though management provided no quantified revenue contribution or order timing.
The competitive Q&A weakened the pricing thesis: CFO Ron Freund said Eltek cannot simply raise prices despite strong demand because it competes with local and foreign suppliers.
The structural investment case depends on operational execution rather than demand creation; absent evidence of sustained higher production and positive gross margins, the backlog is not yet a reliable proxy for earnings power.
Red flags
The analyst directly challenged management on why margins remain negative despite strong demand and significant capacity investment. Management largely repeated that the problem is operational, without quantifying production bottlenecks, utilization, backlog value, or a breakeven revenue level.
Management described the backlog as the highest since the CFO joined but did not disclose its dollar value, conversion schedule, cancellation risk, or expected margin profile beyond broad exchange-rate buckets.
One-third of backlog is a long-term burden tied to historical exchange rates, while raw-material shortages and currency movements remain outside the company’s control.
The company reported a sharp reversal from Q2 2025 profitability to a $1.0 million gross loss and $1.9 million EBITDA loss; the sequential improvement from a $1.8 million gross loss is encouraging but still far from recovery.
Cash generation of $0.7 million in the quarter is not sufficient evidence of self-funded recovery given the $5.6 million first-half net loss and ongoing capital investment.
The first plating line is only in acceptance testing and customer qualification, while the second line remains delayed. Capacity additions therefore carry ramp and execution risk rather than immediate earnings benefit.
