Attractive valuation and compounding quality are offset by concentration, leverage, and limited near-term catalysts.
Latest call · 2024-04-11Exor delivered a strong 2023, with NAV rising from €28bn to €35bn and NAV per share up 33%, but the stock still trades at a discount exceeding 40% to NAV.
The portfolio-compounding record and resumed buybacks support the case, while higher net debt of €3.9bn, heavy reliance on Ferrari and Stellantis, and the lack of a concrete discount-narrowing catalyst argue against adding aggressively after the call.

Near term
The planned €1bn buyback will recommence, providing potential NAV-per-share accretion, but management gave no further details on timing or size.
The IFRS 10 investment-entity transition is expected to create a roughly €12bn non-cash one-off P&L gain and make NAV and GAV audited; this improves transparency but does not create intrinsic value.
Near-term cash deployment is largely committed: approximately €1.7bn remains allocated to Institut Mérieux, Lingotto, Ventures and the remaining buyback.
Annual dividend inflows are expected to remain around €900m before dividends and holding costs, supporting recurring reinvestment capacity.
Longer term
Ferrari and Stellantis generated the bulk of 2023 listed-portfolio appreciation, creating meaningful concentration and exposure to the sustainability of their re-ratings.
Ferrari's valuation has expanded to roughly 50x P/E from about 25x at listing; continued earnings growth may justify part of the premium, but multiple compression is a material risk.
Lingotto and newer private investments could diversify returns, but most Lingotto funds remain in their ramp-up phase and have yet to establish a long performance record.
The long-term thesis remains disciplined capital allocation and NAV compounding, with recurring holding costs expected around €30m and financing costs around 2.5%.
Red flags
When pressed on portfolio rotation to address the greater-than-40% NAV discount, management provided only a generic review-process answer and named no potential divestment or catalyst.
Net financial position moved from €800m net cash to €3.9bn net debt after €4.4bn of investments and shareholder returns, increasing sensitivity to asset valuations and future capital allocation.
Management defended Ferrari's premium-luxury positioning but did not address the downside risk embedded in its roughly 50x P/E valuation.
The Shang Xia thesis in China remains long-dated and unquantified; management acknowledged that the investment will take time without providing milestones or return targets.
