Strong near-term production and capital-intensity improvement outweigh the remaining ramp and project-definition risks.

Latest call · Q4 2018

Buy: Agnico Eagle enters a strong cash-flow inflection, targeting record 2019 production of 1.75 million ounces after producing 1.63 million ounces in 2018, while CapEx falls from roughly $1.1 billion to $660 million. The key bull case is a successful Nunavut ramp and rising free cash flow, but the investment still depends on executing Meliadine and Amaruq, with Canadian Malartic’s underground upside not yet economically defined.

Near term

Meliadine commissioning and first gold pour were expected before the end of February, with commercial ramp-up toward year-end supported by a 180,000-tonne surface stockpile.

Amaruq’s Q3 start and the broader Nunavut ramp are the principal execution catalysts for 2019 production growth.

CapEx reduction to approximately $660 million, combined with higher second-half production, should support free cash flow and the recently announced dividend increase.

Kittila’s planned 60-day autoclave shutdown is a defined near-term operational headwind, though management still expects company-wide record output.

Longer term

Management targets approximately 2 million ounces of production in 2020 and sees potential to reach 10%–15% above that level through the existing brownfield pipeline.

Amaruq underground development could materially improve both pit economics and production beyond 2020, but studies are incomplete and the timing remains uncertain.

Agnico’s reserve and resource base grew 7% to 22 million ounces, with grade rising 8% to 2.7 grams per tonne, supporting the company’s build-and-expand strategy.

LaRonde’s deeper, high-grade mineralization and Canadian Malartic’s Odyssey/East Malartic resources provide upside, but both require additional drilling, ventilation or ramp investment, and economic studies.

The company expects 2020–2021 capital spending of roughly $500 million–$700 million, including about $300 million of sustaining capital, with spending dependent on gold prices and project approvals.

Red flags

Meliadine is still in development: current mining was only about 12,000–15,000 tonnes of ore per month, and management acknowledged the stockpile would be drawn down rather than expanded before ramp-up.

Analysts pressed management on the risk of Canadian Malartic’s open pit running out before underground production is ready. Management could not provide a production rate, cutoff grade, or firm timeline, saying the project remained at the scenario-analysis stage.

Canadian Malartic’s $250 million goodwill impairment, along with impairments at La India and Barqueno, highlights asset-value and project-return risk even though management characterized the charges as largely accounting-related.

Deepening LaRonde below 3 kilometres requires additional ventilation and cooling, while the company is still drilling to establish the full extent and economics of the deeper mineralization.

The $500 million–$700 million future capital envelope is conditional on gold prices and project approvals; the path to production above 2 million ounces is therefore not fully committed.
